Caring for canker sores with over the counter products blog

Canker sores form inside the mouth and may cause significant discomfort. While these sores usually resolve on their own within two weeks, many of our Washington Park patients need to know how to treat this condition at home.

Doctors do not know the exact cause of canker sores, but the following conditions could be related:

  • Stress
  • Autoimmune conditions like HIV, celiac disease, or inflammatory bowel disease
  • Genetic predisposition

Potential triggers for canker sores in some patients include using oral care products with sodium lauryl sulfate, eating spicy or acidic foods, eating nuts, and minor mouth injuries. Mouth injuries may occur from biting soft tissue or from irritation caused by orthodontic appliances.

Suggested Over-the-Counter (OTC) Products for Canker Sores

When you have a canker sore, choosing the right oral care products can make a big difference in pain relief and healing.

Alcohol-Free Mouthwashes (Soothing & Non-Irritating)

Alcohol in mouthwash can sting and worsen irritation around a sore. These are excellent alcohol-free options:

  • TheraBreath Fresh Breath Oral Rinse – Alcohol-free, gentle, and helps neutralize mouth acids.
  • Biotène Oral Rinse – Formulated specifically for sensitive mouths; soothing and hydrating.
  • CloSYS Sensitive Mouthwash – Ultra-gentle, pH-balanced, ideal during flare-ups.
  • ACT Total Care Sensitive Formula Mouthwash – Fluoride-containing and alcohol-free; supports enamel while rinsing gently.

Tip: Use mouthwash after meals and before bed — swish gently for 30–60 seconds.

SLS-Free Toothpastes (Gentle on Oral Tissues)

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) can aggravate canker sores in some individuals. These SLS-free toothpastes help minimize irritation:

  • Sensodyne Pronamel Gentle Whitening Toothpaste – SLS-free and formulated for sensitive teeth and mouths.
  • Tom’s of Maine Anticavity Fluoride Free Toothpaste (SLS‑Free) – A clean, SLS-free formula that’s gentle on soft tissues.
  • Hello Oral Care Fluoride Toothpaste – Naturally Whitening, SLS‑Free – Mint-flavored option that avoids harsh detergents.
  • Jason Powersmile Anti‑Cavity & Whitening Toothpaste (SLS‑Free) – SLS-free and free of artificial flavors; suitable for sensitive mouths.

Note: Even with SLS-free formulas, brushing gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush helps prevent irritation of canker sores.

How to Use OTC Products for Canker Sore Relief

Here’s a quick routine that many patients find helpful:

  1. Rinse with alcohol-free mouthwash after meals to remove debris and soothe tissues.
  2. Brush twice a day with an SLS-free toothpaste; avoid aggressive brushing near the sore.
  3. Use a protective gel or paste (like those listed earlier) directly on the sore to reduce pain while eating or drinking.
  4. Consider a warm saltwater or baking soda rinse (½ teaspoon in warm water) 2–3 times daily.

Remember Your In-Office Options: Debacterol® for Faster Relief

If OTC care isn’t providing enough relief—especially for large, recurrent, or very painful sores—you may benefit from in-office Debacterol® treatment. This topical cauterizing agent is applied directly to the ulcer and can:

  • Provide rapid pain reduction
  • Shorten healing time
  • Break the cycle of recurrent sores.

Many patients feel noticeable relief the same day as treatment.
